About Us
Welcome to Wallow and Root
a little story about us

A FAMILY RUN BUSINESS

Wallow & Root is a family run business based near Tregonning and Godolphin Hills in Cornwall, between Helston and Penzance.

We started the business to deliver the type of food that we like to eat. We supply local meat and veg, with low food miles and as little plastic as possible. We collect our veg directly from the farms guaranteeing the freshest produce. All the farms are between Helston and Gulval, less than 10 miles from the Wallow & Root HQ.

As this is a family business you will see that our kids get involved. Sometimes with the deliveries and collecting the veg (although this has to include buy sweets!), sometimes with helping in our market garden and sometimes 'helping' picking apples.

We involve the girls as much as possible so they get a good understanding of where our food comes from and what is involved in its production and the true cost of our food.

This is Joe. He is the owner and main grower at here Wallow & Root. Joe loves a good day spent working the land, creating new beds, planting new seeds and planning the growing year ahead.

Likes: Good food, trail running, growing stuff (obviously!) and spending time with his young family.

Did you know? Joe is actually a doctor. He is a geochemist by training and has a PhD in diamond exploration!

The Name
How we became Wallow and Root
We often get asked where the name Wallow&Root came from as it is unusual. Before we left Bristol to move to Cornwall we had some pigs which we couldn’t bring with us. To help sell the pork Bridget came up with the name 'Wallow, Root and Snuffle' and we used this to advertise the pork around the University of Bristol. When we needed a name for our new business in Cornwall it made sense, and saved time!, to use the same, although slightly shortened, name and Wallow & Root was born.

Packaging

I never seen such freshness. It's wonderful to know that your eating food that not only grown on your doorstep but literally picked or dug that same day. Deliciousness in a box.

Minimising our impact on the environment is one of the driving factors for starting Wallow & Root. We aim to use as little plastic as possible, we reuse everything that we can and recycle when things can’t be reused. All the eggs boxes can be returned to us for reuse and the egg trays are returned to the farmer. Any plastic that your veg comes in can be reused by you, or returned to us for reuse/recycling.

With the Wallow & Root Market Garden producing more veg we are looking at our packaging and how to avoid plastic. We now have home compostable 'plastic' bags which all the Wallow & Root Market Garden produce will go in. These can either be added to your compost heap or returned to us for composting. Please do not add these to plastic recycling. We are also looking at the labels to ensure that these are biodegradable (we would recommend that you take your salad leaves out of the bags and pout them in Tupperware as the leaves dry out more quickly in the bags than they will in plastic).

Just a note of caution - lots of “compostable” packaging complies with BS EN 13432. Whilst this is a vast improvement on using true plastic the standard only looks at commercial composting, eg/ council brown waste, and not at home composting. If you have a compostable coffee cup lid and put it in your home compost it will probably not break down completely because small heaps tend not to get hot enough. Our bags will be certified for lower temperature, smaller heaps.

At the Wallow & Root Market Garden we are minimising plastic use by using compostable plant pots. The pots are not plastic but made of fibre and we we out these with the plants directly into the ground.
